Two Faces of Web Software: What Are Back-end and Front-end?
Websites undergo a meticulous work process until they reach the user. Starting with the completion of the design phase, in which the visual arrangements of the website are prepared, and being the building process of the site, the software phase consists of two processes in itself. So, what are these two processes?
Websites, one of the leading actors of the internet world, undergo a meticulous work process until they reach the user. The design phase, in which the visual arrangements of the website are prepared, the software phase, which is the building process of the site, the content entries that take place on the site and complement the site, and the security infrastructure that is conducted before it goes live constitute the basic aspects of this process.
The software team steps into the building process, which starts with the approval of the design created by the graphic design team. At this point, we come across two terms known by those who are familiar with the software world; front-end and back-end. If you look at the job postings for software developers, you can see different postings such as front-end developer and back-end developer.
So, what do these two complementary aspects do?
What is the front-end.?
You have opened a website and you have come across menus, visual transitions with campaigns, colors, fonts, and visual settlements. This homepage is a work of front.end developer. In short, everything that the user can see and interact with on a website emerges at the front.end-stage of the software.
Front-end software developers are also the architects of the user experience we call UX. They shoulder the workload to facilitate the user’s work within the site and to ensure that they leave the site satisfied. This stage requires the simultaneous use of technical and visual design skills.
The front-end section, which is created with coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, is created by using platforms such as Backbone, Bootstrap, AngularJS Foundation, and EmberJS, and by utilizing libraries such as jQuery and LESS.
What is the back-end.?
Following the completion of the front-end section which is the face of the site to which the user is invited, the back-end part of the work begins. This is the stage where the system and software of the site are produced. On a standard website, back-end. section consists of a server, an application, and a database. The smooth and harmonious operation of these components is the work of the back-end software developer.
For this trouble-free operation, a back-end. developer works with Ruby, PHP, Java, Python to develop the application. In the following stages, it finds, saves/and changes the necessary data with the help of tools such as MySQL, Oracle, and SQL server and serves it at the end of all processes.
A back-end. developer should be able to use platforms such as Zend, CakePHP, Symfony, and have a good command of version control software such as GIT, CVN, CNS. Such programs help the process to go faster and the software team to build a collaboration easier.
At the start of a new project, a back-end developer prepares a database diagram first. He selects the libraries to be used and starts preparing the background of the system. Thereby, the coding section of the work is initiated and the construction process begins.
We can summarize the difference between the two software developers as follows. Think of a theater play, everything from the scenery on the stage to the players is the front-end, and all the processes performed behind the stage constitute the back-end section.
